What the new tax year means for the self-employed

10 April 2026

The start of a new tax year is the ideal moment to get organised. A few small steps now can save you a stressful January and, often, a smaller tax bill.

Know your key dates

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Your Self Assessment return for the year just ended is due online by 31 January, along with any tax owed. Leaving it late rarely helps.

Get ahead now

  • Set aside a percentage of income for tax as you earn it
  • Keep digital records of income and expenses from day one
  • Check whether any allowances or reliefs apply to you
  • Talk to us early if your circumstances have changed
